Many of these examples can also be categorized as wearable technology.
Wearable Technology
Wearable technology, wearable devices, tech togs, or fashion electronics are clothing and accessories incorporating computer and advanced electronic technologies. The designs often incorporate practical functions and features, but may also have a purely critical or aesthetic agenda.
Wearable technology is related to ubiquitous computing—ever-present technology that is interwoven in everyday life and frictionless in any interaction or transaction.6
The opportunity for businesses is similar to that of the quantified self movement. The key will be to develop utilities or rewards to the users of wearable technology that will encourage them to share their activity data in exchange for added benefits to them. Whether it is personal biorhythms or workout performance, this type of data would be invaluable to many businesses that are trying to either improve their product development, optimize their current use of the product, or simply improve the experience of the product. Particularly for experience improvement, the nature of a real-time data feed would be invaluable to optimize a product’s effectiveness and experience.
The major categories for wearable technology are smart watches, cameras, e-textiles and clothing, mHealth (mobile health), fitness and activity trackers, and augmented reality (AR) glasses.
There has been a continually increasing number of wearable technology companies, many of which are well-known brands such as Adidas, Boston Scientific, Eurotech, Fitbit, Garmin, Google, Jabra, Jawbone, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Meta Watch, Motorola Solutions, Nike, Pebble, Plantronics, Polar Electro, Recon Instruments, Samsung, Sony, and Zephyr Technology.
Table 7.1 is a more complete list of the proliferation of wearable technology companies.
